Data that are captured are usually incomplete, messy, and not consistent with pre-determined formats.
This is because front-line personnel are in a hurry to complete Customer Transactions, or in many instances, Customers are reluctant to provide information which they feel are unnecessary.
As a result, the Customer Information File (CIF) is incomplete, and transactions that access this information fail to be completed.
Also, when data is integrated from other databases, there are inconsistencies in the data conversion, or data mapping.
All these situations require Data Cleaning, e.g. to fill-in missing data (like postcodes), convert transaction data into proper formats, etc.
